In the wake of Hurricane Helene, communities across the southeastern United States, especially the small mountain towns of western North Carolina, have been left reeling. Entire neighborhoods were obliterated, homes reduced to rubble, and families found themselves mourning unimaginable losses. For many, life as they knew it has changed forever. Heartbroken by the scenes of destruction and inspired by the resilience of the affected communities, Woodstock’s most trusted roofers, Tom and Jerry’s Roofing, knew they had to act.
Roofers on A Mission of Compassion and Skill
When disaster struck, Tom and Jerry’s Roofing didn’t hesitate. Guided by a sense of duty and compassion, the team exceeded their typical roles. In October, they took their unique skillsets—and the invaluable experience that Tom himself gained through specialized military service—and put it to work in the heart of the storm’s devastation. Together, they volunteered in Search and Rescue, Cadaver Recovery, and Route Reconnaissance, venturing deep into the hardest-hit areas to help bring order to chaos.
Roughing It on the Front Lines
Working amidst shattered homes and broken landscapes, the team didn’t just assist—they became a lifeline for many. From dawn till dusk, they navigated treacherous paths, often working through the night, stopping only for brief rests by the river in their work trucks. With no time for luxuries, they relied on MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat) to keep them fueled, a nod to Tom’s military background and the team’s dedication. Sleeping under the stars, taking quick breaks in their trucks, and living off military rations added a layer of grit to their mission—a genuine commitment to roughing it for the sake of those in need.
“Everywhere we looked, there was heartbreak, but there was also hope,” Tom shared. “People came together in ways that remind you of what community really means.”
Building a Road to Recovery
The recovery and rebuilding of these communities will take time, and it will take many hands. At Tom and Jerry’s Roofing, we believe in being more than just a roofing company; we believe in being a true partner to our communities. This disaster underscored the importance of that mission, as we saw firsthand the impact of working together. While the physical repairs are underway, the emotional toll of this catastrophe will take even longer to heal. But with every volunteer, every donor, and every compassionate hand, we can help rebuild not just structures but lives.
How You Can Help
We’re committed to supporting these devastated areas and invite others to join in. Recovery takes a village, and there are many ways to contribute. Whether you have time to volunteer, supplies to donate, or simply want to help spread awareness, every effort matters. Together, we can help uplift these communities and restore the hope and resilience that Hurricane Helene tried to break.
The road to recovery is long, but with compassion and unity, we can walk it together.
